The Pekel railway tunnel

The Pekel railway tunnel
At the end of last year, a new section of the railway line between Maribor and Pesnica was opened, which had also comprised the construction of a new Pekel railway tunnel and a new Pesnica viaduct.

CMC GROUP participated in the construction of the new Pekel railway tunnel as a subcontractor. This tunnel with a length of 1,530 meters and a 245-meter long rescue tunnel was built north of Maribor and is situated to the east of the existing railway line. It complies with all of the requirements of the European railway safety legislation and is therefore considered the second most modern railway tunnel in Slovenia. The Pekel railway tunnel is also the first completely waterproof tunnel in Slovenia.

In this challenging and complex project, CMC GROUP performed mechanical engineering works on the hydrant network. The hydrant network runs along the length of both sides of the tunnel (3,400 meters), i.e. within the rescue tunnel and in both portals. It is supplied from a water tank located above the tunnel via an 80-meter deep well. The capacity of the water tank is 150 m3, which suffices for the legally prescribed limit of 800 l/min for at least 2 hours. The hydrant network is ''dry'' and in the case of fire, flaps for filling the network will automatically open.

The new Pekel railway tunnel will improve the safety of the Maribor–Šentilj railway line, enhance its throughput capacity and also increase the railway line's speed to a maximum of 120 km/h, thus shortening travel times.
