The polyethylene coating (TT PE) is a coating extruded at the productions sites of Saint-Gobain PAM. By internal performance of this process, the company ensures a careful supervision and control of the conditions, in which the coating is applied. After the application of the coating, each pipe is tested by using a VN insulation resistivity meter in order to check if the coating provides an uninterrupted protection and operates as a barrier between the protected parts and impacts of the external environment.
Regarding the diameter range two production processes are used:
- radial coextrusion; for DN80 to DN500
- lateral coextrusion; for DN600 and DN1000
The polyethylene layer is thick enough to fully protect the pipes made from ductile alloy in extremely aggressive grounds, while at the same time also during transport and handling. The thickness of the HDPE layer is defined by the EN14628 standard.
The laterally extruded TT PE must not be mistaken with pipes coated with self-adhesive tapes from PE-material. The lateral extrusion ensures continuous protection and full welding of the PE layers. Only the PE layers applied by circular coextrusion or lateral extrusion are compliant with the EN 14628 European standard.
The protection system for joints consists of:
- elastomeric joints for DN 80 to 300
- thermoshrinkable sleeves for DN 350 to 1000
When using pipes with anchored joints (STANDARD Vi, UNIVERSAL Vi or STANDARD Ve) in a salty external environment, thermoshrinkable sleeves instead of the standard elastomeric joint need to be applied.
Polyurethane (TT PUX), used at the Saint-Gobain PAM company is a two-component solvent free system. The pipes are prepared by sandblasting and then heated to a temperature, where it is possible to apply the coating by spraying. It includes a range of products between sizes DN800 and DN2000.
For TT PUX pipes:
- the pipe itself is coated by polyurethane
- the sleeve and the the sleeve connector are coated with epoxy resin
Epoxy resin (pursuant to the EN 14901 standard) is used instead of the polyurethane at the end of the sleeve connector and within the sleeve, since by a thinner coating it ensures equivalent protection. This allows a higher level of control in joining pipes and consequentially an easier and higher joining quality.
As this applies to all pipe systems made of ductile alloy thanks to the epoxy coating on both sides of the pipes also the laying of TT PUX pipes is very simple. After joining parts of the pipeline at the installation site there are no additional protective measures required, except in cases, where anchored joints are applied.
