Central Wastewater Treatment Plant Ljubljana – Phase III

Central Wastewater Treatment Plant Ljubljana – Phase III
The Central Wastewater Treatment Plant Ljubljana (CWWTP Ljubljana) is a key part of the municipal infrastructure of the City of Ljubljana and represents the final stage of the central sewerage system. Its primary function is to collect, treat and safely return wastewater to the natural environment.

Using modern mechanical and biological treatment processes, the Central Wastewater Treatment Plant removes suspended solids, organic matter and other pollutants from wastewater, thereby making an important contribution to the protection of the Ljubljanica River, groundwater resources and the wider environment. Sludge is generated during the treatment process and is further processed to produce biogas. The biogas is used as an energy source for the operation of the plant, including the sludge drying process and heating of the digesters. As the largest municipal wastewater treatment plant in Slovenia, it treats more than 80,000 m³ of wastewater every day, making an important contribution to the healthy and sustainable development of Ljubljana and the surrounding municipalities.

Phase III Construction of the CWWTP Ljubljana

Municipal wastewater treatment plants discharging treated wastewater into watercourses within the Danube River Basin are subject to European and national legislative requirements stipulating that, in addition to the removal of carbon compounds and nitrification, nitrogen and phosphorus compounds must also be removed. The tertiary stage of wastewater treatment was implemented at the Central Wastewater Treatment Plant Ljubljana as part of Phase III. At the same time, the plant's treatment capacity was increased from 360,000 PE to 555,000 PE, taking into account the anticipated connection of new users to the sewerage network.

As part of the wastewater treatment plant upgrade project, CMC GROUP carried out assembly, mechanical installation and electrical installation works for the clients OTV Veolia and Riko. At the hydrolysis, deammonification, centrate storage and biological basin facilities, we installed process equipment and carried out mechanical and electrical installation works. At the primary sludge thickening facility, we carried out the installation of process equipment and mechanical installations, while at the deep filtration facility, in addition to installing equipment and mechanical installations, we also supplied the electrical equipment. As part of the project, we also supplied and installed a ferric chloride (FeCl₃) dosing system.
